Tequila Tasting at Redbones - July 20

posted on 1 July 2009 by maggie

After the sold out whiskey tasting in May, downTown and Redbones are bringing Tastings with Tony back! This time, it’s tequila - North America’s first distilled spirit and one of its most popular. Tony will return to lead the tasting at Redbones, right here in Davis Square.  The tasting and talk are $15.00 and begin at 5:30.  Space is limited, and its first come, first serve, so arrive early to get a spot and enjoy complementary appetizers while you wait.

Asked why tequila, Tony replies, “because tequila gets a bad rap!” He continues, adding “tequila has the reputation of being only a mixing spirit when, at the high end it is complex, nuanced and delicate.  A tasting like the one at Redbones will give people a new appreciation for this centuries old spirit.”

Tony describes tequilas as siblings.  The youngest, blanco, is the least mature and has the most intense flavor of the blue Agave - tequila’s dominant ingredient; it is typically used in mixed drinks like the ever popular Margarita.  Reposado is the middle child, aged in wood barrels for a minimum of 2 months and perfect for sipping.  The oldest and most mature, anejo, rests in barrels for at least a year becoming dark, smooth and complex.  All three types will be served on July 20 and tasters can discover their favorites.  In addition to commenting on taste and flavor, Tony will discuss Mexican regulations covering tequila production including ingredients and manufacturing regions.

Tastings with Tony - Tequila
Date & Time:  Monday, July 20, 5 - 7 pm.  Tasting starts at 5:30 pm.
Blanco: Herraduro, Milagro
Reposado: Cazadores, Chamucos, Lunazul, Milagro
Anejo: Cazadores, Milagro

At Redbones, spirits tastings complement the bar offerings. In the case of tequila, there are nine margaritas on the drinks list, including a special dubbed Celt’s Go Green, and six shot selections.  “Our Tastings with Tony allow patrons to broaden their beverage knowledge by focusing on one spirit,”   says GM, Nick Gregory,  “and, based on attendance at the bourbon tasting, this is a supremely popular idea!”

DrinkBoston Gets Down With dTw&s

You don’t have to take our word for it any more.

From DrinkBoston: “Downtown Wine & Spirits in Davis Square, Somerville, has fairly recently expanded the “spirits” part of its name with hard-to-find bourbons, liqueurs, rums, etc. It also has the best combination website/blog of any liquor store in greater Boston. And they have regular tastings.”

If you don’t know this site, you really should, especially if you have any interest whatsoever in the wide and wonderful world of… well, drinking (and if you don’t have any interest in that world, you should probably ask yourself a couple questions re: why you’re hanging around our site). Founded, written, maintained and all that by Lauren Clark (check out her impressive resume), DrinkBoston contains all manner of 411 on the whole spectrum of booze, ranging from booze to booze accessories to booze events. Plus, she’s compiled lists of the area’s best bars and - this part might be the coolest bit - best bartenders. It’s about time somebody gave that fantastic class of people a little bit of love.

Seriously, check ‘em out.

R.I.P. Popcorn Sutton

posted on 7 May 2009 by tony

While I might in fact be almost two months behind the event, it should still be noted that Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton, epic Tennessee moonshiner and all around bad-ass, has gone to the great backwoods still in the sky. On March 16th, Popcorn was found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in his Ford Fairlane. Allegedly, Popcorn committed suicide rather than serve an 18 month Federal prison sentence for both illegal distilling and possessing a firearm, wishing to die at home instead.  He was either 61 or 62 years old.

For more on Popcorn Sutton, check out the book “Daddy Moonshine”, written by Marvin’s own daughter, Sky Sutton.

Tasting Whiskey At Redbones

posted on 7 May 2009 by tony

Jeff & Tony at RedbonesThis coming Monday, I will be at Redbones from 5-7 tasting 8 different American whiskies, 6 bourbons and 2 ryes respectively. If you’ve got the 12 bucks to get in the door and care to learn about how whiskey is distilled and it’s history in the States, I highly recommend coming.  Redbones will be putting out some eats, and I think it’ll be a grand old time.  The full list of what I’ll be tasting is as follows:

Bourbon:
Woodford Reserve
Elmer T. Lee
Old Fitzgerald 1849
Buffalo Trace
Four Roses Small Batch
Elijah Craig

Rye:
Michter’s
Sazerac

Anyway, hope to see you all out on Monday.

A Night Out With Lairds

posted on 21 April 2009 by tony

I had an exciting Monday night this week.  Last night, Jeff and I sort of snuck into the Lairds event going on at Drink.  We got to try all of the varieties of apple brandy Laird & Co. produces, watched an interesting sideshow about the history of Applejack and then we pretended to be bartenders for awhile, mixing some cocktails behind the bar and generally being ridiculous. I learned how to flame spritz an orange peel, which is an exciting new trick I hope to unveil soon.  It was a great time.  To commemorate this, I will be reviewing Applejack and providing a cocktail recipe featuring this delicious spirit.  Go and read them.
