CapRock Vodka: A Vokda I Actually Like

posted on 16 April 2009 by tony

CapRock VodkaAs this column evolves, you, my darling reader, will discover I am not as enthused about vodka as I am about most other spirits.  It bothers me that a spirit is manufactured to not have a taste.  However, the rare vodka strikes my fancy, and I like to spread the word.  Today, we have the CapRock biodynamic vodka.  It’s got a cool story, and it’s a great spirit.  So let us explore a bit.

CapRock is distilled out in Colorado by Peak Spirits.  The distillery is located on the Jack Rabbit Hill estate, a demeter-certified biodynamic vineyard.  CapRock is distilled from Chambourcin grapes grown on the estate . The cool part is that the grapes are fermented and distilled whole, skins and stems included, and, furthermore, the fermentation process is a “wild fermentation”, so only native, wild yeasts are used.  What does all this mean?  The vodka has a high glycerol content due to the wild fermentation, and using the whole grape imparts fruit tannins to the taste and finish.  Cool, right?  Maybe it seems a little nerdy, but the proof is in the pudding.

This vodka tastes like nothing.  But, guys,  the mouthfeel is smooth and creamy from the glycerol, and the fruit tannins give it a long finish. If you’re a straight vodka rocks person, this is the sort of spirit you want in your glass.  If you like a good mixed drink, this is going to blend right in, plus feel good on your tongue.  Throw down $29.99 and try this out.  You will be back for more.
